Tri-Gon Precision offers a variety of super finishing and microfinishing services for machined parts. Our advanced equipment produces finishes of 64 microinch to 1 Ra (mirror finish). This can be accomplished using various techniques to include grinding, honing, lapping, polishing, high energy tumbling. Super finishing services allow us to create the ideal surface finish for your machined part. In addition, close tolerance surface finishing can remove defects and improve to specified finish callout on print. The addition of applying proprietary techniques in grinding, honing, lapping, polishing, and tumbling, makes achieving the desired surface finish for your machined part possible with Tri-Gon.
What is Super Finishing?
Super finishing is a controlled process used to remove surface irregularities and improve the functional performance of precision components. By applying abrasive materials under specific pressure and motion, this method produces a smooth, consistent finish that enhances wear resistance and reduces friction.
Honing
The honing process offers low capital equipment costs, high metal removal rates and extreme accuracy. It can also be used on a variety of materials. Honing is an abrasive machining process that improves ID finish using mandrel and lubricants with specific properties to finish to precise dimensions. Finishing cylinders is a very common application for the honing process.
Tumbling
Mixing parts with specific media for tumbling and vibrating to accomplish desired microfinish. Could be tumbled with ceramic balls or cones, rough/hard granular material or softer media. Tumble finishing is ideal for smoothing and polishing a rough surface on small parts. Also known as vibratory deburring, this process is used to clean, deburr, descale, burnish, polish, brighten or prepare parts for further finishing.
Lapping
Used on the surface of parts to improve the finish. Using Arizona stone, diamond stone, and others, lapping can be used to create a particular surface roughness. In addition, this process can create very accurate surfaces, usually flat. Lapping works by rubbing two surfaces together with an abrasive between them until the desired finish is achieved.
Super finishing services allow for EXTREME finishing of parts to exact RMS callout. When you talk about mirrors and microinches, the finishes go down to 1 RMS.
Precision Grinding Integration
Tri-Gon offers precision grinding services that include Outside Diameter (O.D.), Inside Diameter (I.D.), Centerless, and Surface Grinding.
Precision surface grinding plays a key role in preparing parts for final super finishing. This process removes excess material while maintaining tight dimensional tolerances per print specifications. At Tri-Gon, grinding is used to produce uniform close tolerance surfaces that serve as a precise foundation for further refinement to add superfinishing techniques. Combining precision grinding with super finishing allows for improved precision over the more demanding requirements of high precision quality parts. These benefits are especially important for high-performance parts.
